Knee Deep in Ramadan
Well, here we are knee deep in Ramadan, and for the most part its been nice. The fasts have gone well, and I've taken the oppurtunity to log a few extra units of prayer and worship (although not even close to how much I would like). The month has also reminded me however, of some of the pet peeves I have and here are some reflections on 'em.
Well, for one, its the fact that people see Ramadan as a time for feasting and then pack on like 500 pounds because they use Ramadan as an excuse to cut off any physical activity from their life. I just wish we would better realise that fasting is about relating to the plight of the underpriveledged, who don't simply have a feast waiting for them when they need it. As for people getting lazy, well...I'll let you guys get creative with that.
Now on to the second. This one REALLY irks me. Its how every person and his uncle at taraweeh prayers will try and be a hero and pick up on the first chance to correct the imam leading the prayer. Come on, you've seen it. You know, theres the imam, stuttering through the end of an ayah. All of a sudden, no sooner has the imam's voice stopped sounding so unequivocal, that there is 15 people pouncing on him like a pack of pirranhas on their prey. C'monn! Doesn't that break SOME sorta rule about the serenity of prayer and go against the spirit of praying in unison and tranquility?? Seriously, what is the point anyway? What do these people hope to accomplish?? Does anyone CARE that person x was the first to correct the imam before he technically even made a mistake??? Actually you know what, maybe some of these people are just looking for a glimpse of glory...can't say I havent ever 'tingled' for a little glory myself.
Actually, maybe it'd just be better if we just started a league called the NCAA or something (National Correctors Association of America). That way, we can keep track of peoples' stats, like 'corrections' and 'assists' (you know, like where the guy sends an imam to a different part of the Qur'an with their correction...soo..its not a mistake CORRECTED per say, but you still did your part)..and for this, we can even take it a step further an assign a EMA (earned mistake average like for pitchers in baseball) to the Imams and give the leader with the best stat the MVP award (Most Valuable Prayer...)
In any case, dont let my satire fool you...I am enjoying this Ramadan as
always. Those are just some of the things I feel go against the greater
spirit of Ramadan, and I hope people would take steps to start correcting
them, myself included. Besides that, I hope everyone else is having a
splendid Ramadan. Till next time, have a good one!
Peace!
